Mrs. Russ Bowers Dies Unexpectedly in Keokuk

Mrs. Russell Bowers, of 629 Central Ave. SW, 81, member of an early day LeMars family, died unexpectedly Tuesday (Feb. 5, 1974) at a Keokuk hospital after an apparent heart attack.

She had been visiting her son Richard Bowers and family in Keokuk since Dec. 18. She fell and suffered a fractured hip Jan. 13. Mrs. Bowers was making satisfactory recovery at the Keokuk hospital when she was stricken.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in LeMars.

Rev. Ralph Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in LeMars Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Mauer’s funeral home.

Alice Violet Schneider was born Oct. 18, 1892, at Minneapolis, the daughter of George L. and Mina Kluckhohn Schneider. The Kluckhohn family was active in the early history of LeMars and were early retail merchants here.

Mrs. Bowers came to LeMars as a child and graduated from school here. She was a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio. She taught vocal music and English in North Dakota and LeMars schools and West Lake school for girls in California. She was a teacher before and after her marriage.

Her marriage to Russell Sage Bowers took place June 4, 1919, at Whittier, Calif. Except for a period between 1925 and 1929 in California, the couple lived in LeMars.

Mrs. Bowers was lifelong and active member of the Presbyterian church. She was a women’s circle member and choir director and sang for many years at various functions.

She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star and P.E.O. She was a past president of the LeMars P.E.O. chapter.

Mrs. Bowers is survived by three sons, Richard G. Bowers of Keokuk, James R. Bowers of LeMars and Donald S. Bowers of Fort Smith, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Mrs. Mae Smith.
