Madonna Hellman, 83, of Le Mars, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Madonna was born March 12, 1925 in Dell Rapids, S.D., the daughter of Bernard and Caroline (Kosse) Hellman. She moved to Le Mars with her parents when she was a young girl and attended St. Joseph's Catholic Schools. Madonna had been employed for 50 years with the hospital in Le Mars. She started her employment with Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars and later was employed by Floyd Valley Hospital in housekeeping.
Madonna was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars and was a member of the Red Hat Society.
Madonna enjoyed playing cards, dice games and solving search-a-word puzzles. She enjoyed spending time with her family, the nieces and nephews and loved hugs.
Survivors include her sister Vera Gaul and her husband Don of Le Mars; a sister-in-law Lavonne Hellman of Spokane, Wash.; three nieces and their husbands: LaDonna and Ed High of Otho, Bernie and Bob Ibanez of Le Mars and Lynn and Tom Thompson of Spokane Valley, Wash.; two nephews: Larry Gaul and Fritz Gaul and his wife Sharon, all of Le Mars; and several great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Caroline Hellman; a brother Jerome Hellman; and a nephew Pat Gaul.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter presiding. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation began at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there was a rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. Pallbearers will be six great-nephews: John Dorr, Nick Dorr, Andy Ibanez, Chris Dorr, Rob Gaul and Zack Gaul.
