Willard H. Herman, 80, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Willard Harvey Herman was born Aug. 15, 1928, on the family farm southeast of Merrill, the son of Harvey and Mabel (Gabel) Herman. Willard attended country school near Merrill. Willard worked for area farmers for a number of years. He was united in marriage to Estella Andersen on Nov. 28, 1950 at Nebraska City, Neb.

Willard served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from Feb. 10, 1951 until his honorable discharge Feb. 10, 1953. Willard had worked at Ludwigs Locker Plant in Le Mars before beginning his 23-year career with Wells' Dairy. He worked as a machine operator at the north ice cream plant until his retirement in 1990. During his retirement years, Willard worked for 10 years for the Le Mars Parks Department.

Willard was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a paid up for life member and volunteer on the Honor Guard with the Wasmer American Legion Post #241, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 1381 of Le Mars, and a lifetime member of the NRA.

Willard enjoyed collecting 1/16th scale tractors and implements, particularly International Harvester and Oliver tractors. He enjoyed hunting for deer, antelope, and elk.

Family was very important to Willard and Stella. They enjoyed their grandchildren and later in life great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Estella of Le Mars; two sons, Leland Herman and Gary Herman and his wife Cindi all of Le Mars; five grandchildren, Kelli Herman and her special friend Tracy, Cliff Herman and his wife Tanya, Kyle Herman and his wife Jennifer, Shanon Shipp and her special friend Jose, and Shane Herman; 14 great-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Eva Varenhorst of Le Mars, Gerald Herman of Stanton, Iowa, Marjorie Willer and her husband Virgil of Akron, Deloris Bohlken of Le Mars, Duane Herman and his wife Nancy of Le Mars, Shirley Baker and her husband Verlyn of Pickstown, S.D., Gladys Mroczkowski of Le Mars, Milford Herman and his wife Sharon of Grand Terrace, Calif., and Donald Herman and his wife Gloria of Urbandale; and many nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Willard was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mabel (Gabel) Herman; and two brothers, Leland Herman in infancy and Milton Herman.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with the Rev. Gary Landsness and Marcia Young, A.I.M. officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery at Le Mars, with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post #241 of Le Mars. Visitations with the family present was after 2 p.m. Sunday followed by a 6 p.m. prayer service, all at the Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars. Visitations continued Monday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Pallbearers will be Tim Herman, Dan Bohlken, Kevin Mroczkowski, Cliff Herman, Kyle Herman, and Shane Herman.
