Troy Ellis Haakenson was born Sept. 21, 1972, at Montevideo, Minn., the son of Steve and Kathy (Sumner) Haakenson. Troy was raised near Dawson, Minn., and later moved with his family to Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. He graduated from Sergeant Bluff-Luton High School in 1991. In 1994, he graduated from Western Iowa Tech as an electrician. He worked for Chesterman Company in Sioux City as an electrician from 1994 until 1999. Troy was united in marriage to Melisa Amundson on April 18, 1997 at Elk Point, S.D. Together they are the proud parents of their children, Steven age 11 and Kristina age 5.

As a family, they enjoyed camping at Lake Cochrane, near Gary, S.D., during the summers. Troy has loved animals since childhood and enjoyed having animals on their acreage near Seney. One of his greatest joys was taking pride in the acreage where the family lived. He enjoyed hunting and going fishing when time allowed.

With his mechanical skills, Troy enjoyed "tinkering" with older vehicles. He helped his friend and neighbor, Albert Schulz on the farm whenever needed. Troy was a very hard worker and giving person. He was always willing to help others. Most recently he had wired the Assembly of God Church when they moved to their new church.
