LUVERNE, Minn. -- Darrel C. Popken, 85, of Luverne died Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Hospice Cottage of Luverne.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne, with the Rev. Gary H. Klatt officiating. Burial will be 2:15 p.m. Monday in St. John's Cemetery at Craig, Iowa. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:45 p.m., at Hartquist Funeral Home, Engebretson Chapel in Luverne.

Darrel C. Popken was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Mountain Lake, Minn., the son of Otto and Emma (Marienau) Popken. He attended Happy Hollow School in Preston Township of Plymouth County, Iowa. Upon completion of school, Darrel continued to help on the family farm. In 1956, he moved to Rock County, Minn. and began working with concrete in the construction industry. In 1968, he moved into Luverne, where he continued to work until he retired. In 1994, he moved into the Centennial Apartments in Luverne.

Darrell was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Luverne. He enjoyed all of the people at the Centennial Apartments and the Senior Citizens Center. He especially enjoyed serving the ice cream. He also loved to be around his family.

Darrel is lovingly remembered by his two sisters, Luella Karr of Ireton, Iowa, and Sandra and her husband, Gerald Winter, of Luverne, Minn.; nine nieces; four nephews; many great-nieces, great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Kenneth, Arnold and Wayne; a brother-in-law, Kenyon Karr; and a sister-in-law, Vivian Popken.
