Velma Ruth Port, 74, of Akron, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at the Akron City Convalescent Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Services were held Saturday, May 1,1999, at the First Church of Christ in Akron with Reverend Justin May officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron, was in charge of arrangements: Pallbearers were Pete Peters, Archie Port, Jr., Terry Port, Jeffery Burdette, Scott Synder, Gordon Port, Delmer Kleihauer, and Casey Port. Mika Rosenbaum was organist with Tim Kelly as soloist.

Mrs. Port was born April 1, 1925, in Hinton, Iowa, the daughter of John L. and Katie E. (Petersen)-Knecht. She attended school in Merrill, Iowa, and moved to Akron in 1940. She was baptized March 16, 1955, by Reverend G.W. Swan at the First Church of Christ in Akron. She was a lifelong resident of Plymouth County, Iowa. She married Alva Port on March 3, 1944, in Elk Point, S.D. He died November 17, 1979.

Survivors include two sons, Archie D. and his wife Kay Port of Alton, Iowa, and Denny L. Port of Akron, Iowa; one step-son and his wife, Daryl and Joyce Port of Akron, Iowa; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred "Al" Knecht of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jim and his wife Alma Knecht of Akron, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Ardie Knecht of Vermillion, S.D.;. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, William and Larry; one sister and her husband, Bertha and Ervin Smid; and one sister-in-law, Mary Lee Knecht.
