James J. Koenig, 88, of Belleville, Ill., died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006.
James J. Koenig was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Le Mars, the son of Jacob G. and Elsie (Nicholson) Koenig.
He graduated from Iowa State College in Ames in 1939, with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering. He was a production supervisor for Procter and Gamble from 1940 to 1944 in Kansas and Tennessee. His military services from 1944 to 1946 was in the Army Corps of Engineers, where he was a member of the Manhattan Project, which was involved with the production of the first atomic bomb. Mr. Koenig joined the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in 1946, and served to 1956 in New York, N.Y., St. Louis, Mo., and Plant City, Fla.
He joined the Aluminum Company of America in 1956 and served to 1977, in Plant City, Fla., Pittsburgh, Pa., and East St. Louis, Ill., where he was a senior engineer. during his professional career he was recognized at various times by election to the honorary engineering fraternity, Tau Beta Pi, the Scientific Research Society of America (Sigma Xi), Who's Who in the Middle West, Who's Who in Technology Today, American Men of Science, and International Who's Who in Engineering.
Mr. Koenig received five U.S. patents and authored Monographs on paper coating pigments and encyclopedia articles on alumina and aluminum ores.
He was active in professional societies and was a member of American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, of which he was chairman of St. Louis Section from 1970 to 1972, and Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology, of which he was president of St. Louis Society from 1976 to 1977.
His outside activities include service as cub master of Pack 37, from 1962 to 1964, scoutmaster of Troop 12 from 1964 to 1972, coordinator of Girls Softball, West End Khoury League from 1961 to 1968, and News Democrat Advisory Board from 1983 to the present.
Mr. Koenig was a member of the First Unitarian Church in St. Louis, Mo.
Survivors include his wife, Eva. M. (Sprakties) Koenig; a son, James G. Koenig of Streamwood, Ill.; a daughter, Eva Jean (Grey) Durham of Peachtree City, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth B. and Cynthia Koenig of Lenzburg, Ill.; a sister, Elizabeth G. (John B.) Armsby of Brevard, N.C.; a sister, Jean K. Koenig of Le Mars; and a grandson, Nicklas K. Koenig of Lenzburg, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Donald M. Koenig.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. at Valhalla-Holten Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill., with the Rev. Suzanne T. Meyer officiating. Upon his request, cremation was held. Visitation was from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the donor's choice.
