LE MARS, Iowa -- James R. Landis Sr., 56, of Le Mars died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars with the Rev. Matt Wentz of Le Mars Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Saturday, continuing until the service.

James Richard Landis was born Jan. 3, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, the son of James C. and Betty (Hoskins) Landis. He was raised and educated in Akron, graduating from Firestone High School in 1965. James began serving his country with the United States Army on Dec. 30, 1966. He served in Alaska and overseas in Germany with Company A of the 808th Engineering Battalion. He operated construction machinery prior to his honorable discharge on Dec. 23, 1969.

After the service, James made a trip to Le Mars to see friends and met Carolyn Cooper. They were united in marriage on Sept. 23, 1972, in Le Mars. They made their home in Le Mars where James worked at Terra Chemicals and Wiltgen Ready Mix and Construction. He later worked for Well's Dairy for 30 years in various departments. James was forced to retire in 2002 due to his failing health.

James was a member of Le Mars Church of Christ. He had belonged to Wasmer Post 241 of the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing, and was constantly remodeling their home. James was an avid Nascar fan and collected Snoopy and Woodstock memorabilia.

Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 32 years, Carolyn Landis of Le Mars; seven children, Allen Lamb and his wife Lorrie of Sioux Falls, David Lamb and his wife Laurie of Le Mars, Michael Lamb of Le Mars, Carla Campbell and her husband Frank of Sac City, Iowa, Jolynn "Jodi" Ritter of Sioux Falls, James Landis Jr. and his wife Sarah of Le Mars, and Sharon Evers and her husband Ed of Laurens, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, David Landis and his wife Wanda of Gallion, Ohio, and Phillip Landis and his wife Mary of Le Mars; four sisters, Dianne Dykes of Port Charlotte, Fla., Barb Lynch and her husband Bob of New Matamorris, Ohio, Sharon Baggozzi and her husband Sam of Sherrodsville, Ohio, and Joanne Landis of Silver Lake, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter Susan; and a brother Fred Landis.
