LE MARS, Iowa -- Charles E. Lane, 77, of Le Mars died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, following surgery at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Struble, Iowa, with the Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Wasmer Post 241. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., all at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Charles Edgar "Chuck" Lane was born April 12, 1925, in Onawa, Iowa, the son of George Edgar "Ed" and Minnie W. (Birk) Lane. He was raised near Onawa and graduated from Onawa High School in 1941. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served overseas on the USS Bates in the Normandy Invasion in June 1944. He was selected to become a member of the V-12 Program. His training took place at St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, he attended Westmar College in Le Mars, where he received his bachelor's degree. He also received his master's degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. In addition, he had a certified public accountant certificate from the state of Iowa.

He married Mary Kathleen Hauser of Struble on June 1, 1948, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He was employed by the C.P.A. firm of Keightley and Pederson of Sioux City for several years. He was then employed for a couple of years with Montgomery Wards and Company of Chicago. The couple moved to East Northport, N.Y., in 1955. He spent the remainder of his career with Grumman Aerospace Company (Northrop-Grumman) on Long Island for a total of 34 years. He also was a member of the board of directors of the Bethpage Federal Credit Union on Long Island for 21 years. He retired in 1990 from Grumman and from the credit union board in 1995. The couple retired to Le Mars in June 1995.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and American Legion Wasmer Post 241, where he served as commander for two years. He also was a member of the 40/8 Club. He was an active volunteer for various organizations in the community. He enjoyed bowling, reading, traveling and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathleen of Le Mars; two daughters, Kristin Lane of Le Mars, and Julia Lane of Islip, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Kylie Forbes of Islip, N.Y.; a sister and her husband, Mary Ann and Bob McFarland of Whiting, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Fouts; and two brothers-in-law, Raymond Fouts and James E. Hauser.
