Melba Marie Garvin

Melba Marie Garvin, 76, of Akron, Iowa, died Sunday, September 15, 1996, at Omaha, Nebraska hospital following a brief illness.

Services were held September 19, 1996, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Akron, Iowa, with Pastor Marion Sindt officiating Music was “He Touched Me” and “Hymn of Promise” sung by Gary Tucker, accompanied by Carol Harris on the organ. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Akron under direction of Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron.

Casketbearers were Steven Sparks, Shane Sparks, Wayne Mielke, Clint Paulson, Cur Paulson, and Doug Richards.

Mrs. Garvin was born January 22, 1920, in Parker, South Dakota, the daughter of Lloyd and Flossie (Dembo) Harmon. She graduated from Parker High School in 1938 and Sioux Falls College in 1942, with an associate’s arts degree. She taught elementary grades at Andover and Alcester, South Dakota, where she also taught high school vocal music, and Longfellow Elementary in Sioux Falls.

She married Robert Garvin in Alcester April 2, 1945, and they moved to Ames, Iowa, where he attended veterinary school. She taught elementary grades at Milford School near Ames. After his graduation in 1949, they moved to Sioux City where he worked in a laboratory. They moved to Akron in 1952.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Michelle Sparks and her husband, Steve, of Madison, Wisconsin; Suzanne Garvin of Chicago, Illinois; a son, Dr. Kevin and his wife, Janette Garvin, of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister, Lois and her husband, Wilbur Mielke, of Hartford, South Dakota; and six grandchildren, Amber, Shane, and Kira Sparks and Robert, Elisabeth and Charlotte Garvin.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Shirley Paulson and Nita Johnson.
