HELEN O. DIRKS

HAWARDEN, Iowa—Helen O. Dirks, 81, of Hawarden died Monday, Nov. 18, 1996, at the Hawarden Community Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Byron Shafer officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mrs. Dirks was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Akron, the daughter of John and Bessie (Raish) Willer. She attended rural Breezy Hill School and school near Westfield, Iowa.

She married John Dirks on March 10, 1938, in Akron, Iowa. The couple farmed near Westfield, Iowa, then near Hawarden, until moving into Hawarden in 1955. She was employed at the Otis Radio in Hawarden from 1954 to 1970.

Mrs. Dirks was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was active in women’s and mission groups.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Marlys and Garrie Hurlbert of Greeley, Colo.; a brother, Dwain Willer, of Akron, Iowa; four sisters, Vera McMahon of Sioux City, Betty Jean Hamman of Navato, Calif., Belva Watters of Ocheyedan, Iowa, and Donna Caskey of Akron; and a granddaughter, Tamera Burkhart.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Claussen.
