MERRILL, Iowa -- Irene M. Horton, 93, of Des Moines, formerly of Merrill, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa, with the Rev. Jason Larson of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

Irene Mary Carey was born Aug. 2, 1910, in Marcus, Iowa, to Joseph and Anna (Treinen) Carey.

She was united in marriage to Horace Horton on Feb. 24, 1930, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. The couple lived in Merrill most of their lives. They had lived in Le Mars before moving to Des Moines 10 years ago. Horace passed away in March 1999. She was a homemaker and throughout her life was a devoted caregiver, caring for her family, friends and even fellow residents at the Senior Life Center.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie Wimer and her husband, Frank Fogarty, of Des Moines and Mary and her husband, James Strub, of Merrill; a son and his wife, Thomas and Helen Horton of Gaza, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, James Strub, Jon Strub and his wife, Lisa, Joseph Strub, Amy and her husband, Ed Wlodarczyk, Carey and her husband, Jim Hubbell, Annie Wimer, Dianna Moulton, Jeff Horton, Richard Horton and his wife, Shirley, Karen and her husband, Stacy Buck, Neal Horton and his wife, Shannon, Marsha and her husband, Don Major, and Andrew Horton; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lucille Carey of Marcus, Antonette and her husband, Frank Peppersack, of Le Mars and Ruth Horton of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Horace in March 1999; four brothers, Ray, Gerald, Mark and James Carey; and a sister, Florence Gifford.
