MERRILL, Iowa -- Melvin Raymond "Ray" Kindler, 63, of Merrill died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at his residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Merrill First United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Charles Tefft and Sara Malone officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.
Mr. Kindler was born Sept. 21, 1938, in Mankato, Kan., the son of Aloyous R. and Opal M. (Silsby) Kindler. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Washburn University in 1961, and his master of education degree from Colorado State University in 1969.
He married Carrol V. Sperry in Last Chance, Colo., on Dec. 3, 1959. He worked for Martin Marietta Corp., Aerospace Division in Denver, Colo., as an engineering draftsman from 1957 to 1959, and as an avionics design engineer from 1962 to 1965. He moved to Trinidad, Colo., and taught math and drafting at Trinidad State Junior College from 1966 to 1969. They moved to Merrill in 1969, where he worked for Western Iowa Tech Community College from 1969 to 1999, as an instructor in the mechanical engineering technology program. He was the Division Dean of Business, Office and Engineering Technologies at the time of his retirement in 1999.
Ray was a member of several professional education associations, including American Vocational Association, Iowa Vocational Association and American Technical Association. He was a member of the national board of trustees of the American Technical Association for nine years. Ray also was active in the Merrill Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife, Carrol; three daughters, Renae Kindler of Evergreen, Colo., Kristi and her husband, Bruce Miller of Bowie, Md., and Yvonne and her husband, Pat Pridie of Hinton, Iowa; seven grandchildren; a stepgrandson; several nieces and nephews; a brother and his wife, Dennis and Wendy Kindler of Aurora, Colo.; and a sister and her husband, Linda and Bob O'Connor of Aurora.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
