LE MARS, Iowa -- Donald J. Taylor, 82, of Le Mars passed away Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Merrill, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill. Visitation will be 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Donald James Taylor was born July 10, 1922, in Iowa. He was adopted by James Irwin and Mary (Howe [Howes]) Taylor. He was raised and educated in the Merrill area and graduated from Merrill High School in 1939. He would later attend college at Westmar College in Le Mars and major in music.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He serviced air crafts and played in the Army Air Corps band. He attained the rank of sergeant prior to his honorable discharge. Following his military service he returned to the Merrill area where he farmed.
He married Bernice Acord on July 22, 1947. He also worked in Merrill, where he drove a tank truck for Branum Oil Co. He retired and moved to Le Mars in 1987.
He was an active member of the American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125. He held numerous offices with the American Legion on the local, state and national level. He also attended many of the national conventions held throughout the country. He also was a member of the Eagles Club in Le Mars.
He will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Steve and Sally of Victorville, Calif., Toni and her husband, Mark Shook of Sioux City, Kathy and her husband, Bill Paul of Barneston, Neb., and Jim and his special friend, Patty of Lincoln, Neb.; three grandchildren, Shelly, Steven Jr. and Kevin; a great-granddaughter, Rachel; a sister, Lucretia Trometer of Nashwauk, Minn.; and a special friend, Mary Lihudis of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
