HERMAN A. KOWALKE
Herman A. Kowalke, 77, Plymouth county native and lifetime resident died Saturday (May 20, 1978) at Floyd Valley Hospital after an extended illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's American Lutheran Church, Rev. Arnold Imbrock and Rev. William Striepe officiated. Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens, LeMars, under the direction of the Luken-Johnson Funeral Home.
Mr. Kowalke was born April 22, 1901, at rural Hinton to Albert and Bertha Jahn Kowalke. He farmed in the Kingsley and LeMars area, retiring from farming in 1976.
He married Bernice Riddle, Feb. 12, 1930, in Sioux City.
He was a member of St. John's church.
Survivors are his wife, Bernice; two sons, Herman Jr. and his wife Bev of LeMars; Marvin and his wife Ruby of Iowa City; two daughters, Mrs. Nick (Marlene) Wurth, Placentia, Calif., and Mrs. Don (Ione) Harpenau, Diamond Bar, Calif.; eight grandchildren; Mrs. Steve (Kathy) Sitzmann, LeMars, Steven Kowalke, Diamond Bar, Calif.; Fred and Lori Kowalke, Iowa City; Tina and Marcy Harpenau, Diamond Bar, Calif.; Julie and Deanne Wruth Placentia, Calif.; and a great grandson, Adam Sitzmann, LeMars.
He is also survived by three brothers, Walt, Sioux City; Albert and Arnold, both of LeMars; and a sister, Mrs. Eric (Vera) Petersen, LeMars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.
