BERNICE KOWALKE
Mrs. Herman A. (Bernice) Kowalke, 75, longtime LeMars and Hinton resident, died unexpectedly Friday morning (April 16, 1982) at The Abbey Care Center in LeMars.
Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John's American Lutheran Church in LeMars with Rev. William Striepe officiating. Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural LeMars, under the direction of the Johnson-Luken funeral home.
Bernice Riddle was born Sept. 12, 1906, at Ute, Iowa, to Matthew and Martha Riddle. She married Herman A. Kowalke Feb. 12, 1930, at Sioux City. He preceded her in death May 20, 1978.
The couple farmed in the Hinton and LeMars areas and retired to LeMars in 1976.
Mrs. Kowalke was a registered nurse and was employed throughout the years at Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City. She was a member of St. John’s church.
Survivors are two sons, Herman Jr., and his wife Beverly, LeMars; Marvin and Ruby Kowalke, Iowa City; two daughters, Mrs. Nick (Marlen) Wurth, Placentia, Calif., and Mrs. Don (Ione) Harpenau, Diamond Bar, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Mrs. Steve (Kathy) Sitzmann, LeMars; Steven and Lori Kowalke, LeMars; Fred and Lorie Kowalke, Iowa City; Tena and Marcy Harpenau, Diamond Bar, and Julie and Ione Wurth, Placentia; three great-grandchildren, Adam, Travis and Tina Sitzmann, LeMars.
