REMSEN, Iowa -- Arnold "Arnie" Galles, 89, of Remsen died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Orange City Municipal Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson, Monsignor Nicholas J. Ruba, the Rev. John J. McGuirk and the Rev. Thomas J. Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mr. Galles was born March 23, 1913, in rural Remsen, the son of Mike and Anna (Schneiders) Galles. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. He then was a farm laborer in the Remsen and Granville, Iowa, area.
He married Coletta Plathe on April 16, 1940, in Granville. They farmed near Remsen until retiring on the farm in 1990. They moved into Remsen in December 1994. Coletta died Jan. 14, 2000.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus and Luxembourg Brotherhood.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Roger and Donna, Larry and Ann, Randy and Lavonne, all of Remsen, and Jim and LaVonne of Le Mars, Iowa; three daughters, Mary Ricke of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Ann and her husband, Jerry Bohnenkamp of Remsen, and Betty Galles of Le Mars; 23 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Milton and Arlene and Marvin and Margie, all of Remsen; and four sisters-in-law, Geraldine Hodapp of Canby, Minn., Helen Plathe of Orange City, Mary Ann Hansen of Remsen, and Esther and her husband, Leo Gergen of Alton, Iowa.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Russ Galles; a brother, Emmanuel; and a sister, Evelyn Pottebaum.
Pallbearers will be Jason Bohnenkamp, Brad, Mike, Steve and Tom Galles and Mike Ricke. Catholic Order of Foresters honorary pallbearers will be Jennifer Bohnenkamp, Lisa Plendl, Lisa Zbylut, Mary Couture, Dan, Nick, Barry and Ryan Galles. Knights of Columbus honorary pallbearers will be James Beck, Anthony Delperdang, Dale Galles, Allan and Elmer Klein and Alfred Wilberding. Luxembourg Brotherhood honorary pallbearers will be Ervin Ahlers, Dwayne Douvia, Melvin Koch, Irvin Schroeder, Bob Mai and Jim Wolf.
