IRETON, Iowa -- Erlene Eddy Kading, 90, of Ireton died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Hawarden Community Hospital in Hawarden, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Ireton, with the Revs. Stuart Schreur and Kevin Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Kevin Schneider, at Porter Funeral Home in Ireton.
Erlene Eddy Kading was born Feb. 15, 1911, in Ireton, the daughter of Frank J. and Della (Eddy) Parrott. She lived in Ireton her whole life, graduating from Ireton High School in 1928. She began teaching country school between Kuecher and Vander Hamm schools in Reading Township and Craig school in Plymouth Township for 10 years.
Erlene married Edward John Kading of Ireton on Aug. 28, 1939, in Sioux City. They farmed in rural Ireton until 1979. Erlene returned to teaching in 1956 at the Ireton Public School, where she taught for nearly 21 years. She had graduated from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa and attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. Ed died Jan. 11, 1998.
Erlene was active in many community and church affairs. She was a member of Ireton United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and West Sioux Retired Teachers. She was a charter member of the Ireton Historical Society and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and Northwest Iowa Aging Commission.
Survivors include her niece and her husband, Mary Jane and Roger Bean of Cottage Grove, Wis.; grandnieces, Jody (Esser) Grossman of Cottage Grove and Lori Esser of Chicago; a grandnephew, Lt. Lee Esser of Elizabethtown, Ky.; two great-grandnieces, Sydney and Haley Grossman; and a sister-in-law, Elvira Kading of Ireton.
In addition to her husband of 59 years, Erlene was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, F. Iva Roberts Stauffacher of Madison, Wis.
