AKRON, Iowa -- Gerald Dean Frerichs, 61, of Akron died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Akron, with the Rev. William Kallestad officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Gerald Dean Frerichs was born July 1, 1942, in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Edwin H. and Ella Marie (Beeck) Frerichs. He graduated from Akron High School and attended Western Iowa Tech Community College for welding and ag business. He served in the Army National Guard for two years, then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam from 1965 until 1970.

He married Mary Jean Frederick on Jan. 4, 1969, at Central Baptist Church in Sioux City. He farmed in the Akron area and was employed as a welder for Load King in Elk Point, S.D.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and American Legion Hoschler Post 186. In his free time, he loved to fish and to farm.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean Frerichs of Akron; two sons, Gerald D. Frerichs Jr. of Alcester, S.D., and Edwin Herbert Frerichs and his wife, Laura of Alcester; a daughter and her husband, Theresa Marie and Duane Schiefen of Hawarden; his mother, Ella Frerichs of Akron; a brother and his wife, Randy and Charlene Frerichs of Akron; a sister and her husband, Pat and John Hill of Excelsior Spring, Mo.; two grandchildren; and five nieces and eight nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.
