REMSEN, Iowa -- Mary A. Freking, 85, of Remsen died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa, of complications from diabetes.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a St. Mary's Guild and a Catholic Daughters of America rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mrs. Freking was born Oct. 16, 1918, in rural Worthington, Minn., the daughter of William and Theresa (Derga) Schaffer. She was raised in the Worthington area and received her education at St. Paul's High School in Worthington, graduating in 1935. She then did domestic work in the Worthington area.

On Jan. 18, 1940, she married Joseph H. Freking in Worthington. They made their home near Kingsley, Iowa, where they engaged in farming. In 1945, they moved to a farm near Remsen. In 1969, they retired and moved into Remsen. Joseph died Sept. 15, 1994.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, Missionary Association of Catholic Women and a former member of Happy Siesta Health Care Center Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Marlene (Mrs. Edward) Bennett of Remsen and Joyce and her husband, Gordon Vavricek of Scribner, Neb.; three sons and their wives, Loren and Janice of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Norman and Janene of Ashton, Iowa, and Dennis and Sarah of Whittemore, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Kintzle of Manchester, Iowa; a brother, William Schaffer of Colesburg, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Schaffer of Edgewood, Iowa, and Anita Schaffer of Manchester, Iowa; and two brothers-in-law, Gregg Freking and Leo Freking and his wife, Theresa, all of Le Mars, Iowa.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Clyde as a child; a son-in-law, Edward Bennett; four sisters, Aurelia Roling, Margaret Roling, Sister Mary Leonard Schaffer, O.S.F. and Mildred Gosen; and two brothers, Lawrence and Leo Schaffer.

Pallbearers will be Dale Bennett, Joe, Judy, Gavin and Dylan Freking and Larry and Luke Vavricek.
