HINTON, Iowa -- Virgil D. Frerichs, 71, of Hinton passed away suddenly Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at his home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton, with the Rev. David Kottlowski officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites conducted by Casper American Legion Post 477 of Hinton. Visitation with the family present will be after 3 p.m. today, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Virgil Dean Frerichs was born July 9, 1933, on the family farm to George and Elnora (Schmidt) Frerichs. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Preston Township, rural Akron, Iowa. He attended country school in Preston Township. Virgil served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.
He was united in marriage to Bonnie Howe on Feb. 20, 1954, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton. He farmed in Plymouth County all of his life. In the later years, Virgil and Bonnie enjoyed traveling throughout the southern states, especially Gulf states, Alabama and Padre Island, Texas. Virgil and Bonnie enjoyed their lake home on Lake Shetek in Minnesota for many summers.
Virgil's passion in life was farming and raising cattle. In later years he enjoyed fishing at the cabin with his fishing buddies and playing cards at the "office." He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed the nickname of "The Boss" that was bestowed upon him by his family.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Bonnie of Hinton; four children, Suzan and her husband, Randy Kovarna of Merrill, Iowa, their children, daughter, Julee Kovarna of Le Mars, and a son, Jeff (Sarah) and their daughter, Madison; Steve Frerichs of Hinton; Mike and his wife, Jan Frerichs of Hinton, and their children, Cassie and Levi; and Tammi Frerichs of Hinton and her children, Kaleigh and Troy Boetger; two sisters, Lois Voss and her husband, Varold of Akron, and Shirley Popken of Brandon, S.D.; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Alvin and Marilyn Howe of Hinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elnora (Schmidt) Frerichs; two brothers-in-law, Gary Popken and Mervin Howe; and a sister-in-law, Thelma Howe.
