Marvin F. Frerichs, 82, of Sioux City died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Sunrise Retirement Community following a lengthy, courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Paul Mueller and David Zirpel officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Paul Jackson, flag presenter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arrangements are being handled by Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Frerichs was born Nov. 18, 1919, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Henry R. and Mary (Erks) Frerichs. He was raised in rural Akron and graduated from Hawarden (Iowa) High School in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge, he moved to Sioux City.

He married Halene Bartels on April 19, 1947, in Sioux City. He started his own business, Frerichs Garage in 1947, and ran the successful business for more than 50 years. He was one of the first automatic transmission specialists in Sioux City.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Halene of Sioux City; two sons and their wives, Ray and Diana Frerichs of Hinton, Iowa, and Dale and Marti Frerichs of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Wanda and Jim Jackson of Sioux City, and Janet and Doug Tondreau of South Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Arnie and Edith Frerichs of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Elsie Frerichs of Akron; seven grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, William, Alvin and Henry Jr.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
