FRANCIS BAKER

MERRILL, Iowa --- Francis Evans “Ike” Baker, 83, of Merrill died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at The Abbey in LeMars, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Curtis Matson officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mr. Baker was born Oct. 24, 1917, near Merrill, the son of Frank and Matie (Jensen) Baker. He attended school in Merrill and graduated from Merrill High School in 1936. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed in Hawaii, Okinawa, Japan, and the Philippines.

He married Marian Marienau on Oct. 31, 1942, in Dakota City. He was employed with Warren Electric in Sioux City, sold feed for Mooreman Feeds and was a car salesman for the Ford agency in LeMars.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125 and Merrill Lions Club. He managed the Merrill softball team for many years.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas and Robert and two sisters, Lois Sutton and Wilma Zemke.

Pallbearers will be Brandon and Terry Marienau, Lance Vanderloo, Francis and Tom Baker and Tim Stroup.
