LA VONNE BAKKEN

KINGSLEY, Iowa --- LaVonne Bakken, 79, of Kingsley, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 14, 1996, at a Sioux City hospital.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Congregational Church in Kingsley with the Rev. Howard Marty officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will be afer 2 p.m. Sunday, with a 6 p.m. prayer service, at the Earnest-Dickison-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Mrs. Bakken, the former LaVonne Kelso, was born Dec. 6, 1916, in Kingsley, the daughter of Mert and Bertha (Bainbridge) Kelso. She graduated from Madison (S.D.) High School and attended General Beadle College in Madison. After college she began helping mothers of new born children. She married Melvin Bakken June 24, 1939, in Huron, S.D. The couple made their home in Kingsley. Mrs. Bakken is well remembered for the day care she provided to some of the children of Kingsley, and later to some of their children.

Mrs. Bakken was a member of the Church of The Brethren in Kingsley, the Ladies Aid of the church, and the Elkhorn Township Birthday Club.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin; two daughters, Lois and her husband Dan Stein of Sioux City, and Lana Brownlee of Des Moines, Iowa; a son and his wife, Loy and Jill Bakken of Sioux City; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Mirt Kelso of Hinton.
