Evan Ryan Athay was born April 24, 1985, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Floyd and Janine (Van Gorden) Athay. The family moved to Le Mars in 1988. Evan attended grade school at Franklin Elementary School and was currently a sophomore at Le Mars Community High School. He had also served as a "batboy" for his dad's varsity baseball team.

Evan was an active member of Le Mars Bible Church, where he received the Lord as a young boy. He was also a member of the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Evan enjoyed his friends. He often could be found chatting on ICQ, and when hospitalized kept in contact with his friends on his laptop computer. He always had a smile for all to enjoy. At home he loved to "tinker," he enjoyed taking items apart to see how they worked and putting them back together. Evan loved his family, friends and the Lord.
