LE MARS, Iowa -- Robert L. "Bob" Cooper, 71, of Le Mars died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Robert Lee was born May 23, 1930, in Sutherland, Iowa, the son of Orlow and Metta (Hansen) Cooper. As a child, he enjoyed fishing with his grandparents and inventing with his father. The family moved to Le Mars in 1945. He graduated from Le Mars High School in 1948, then worked construction in Le Mars. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953, during the Korean Conflict, achieving the rank of sergeant. He returned to Le Mars and was employed with Boswell Contracting in Sioux City.
On Jan. 16, 1960, Bob and Donita Clement were united in marriage. They moved to Merrill, Iowa, in 1969. He continued to work for Boswell's until 1980, then for Duit Contracting of Edmond, Okla. The couple lived in Oklahoma from 1983, until Bob retired in 1998. They returned to Le Mars in 1999.
He was a handyman in many ways. He enjoyed drawing, sketching, fishing, hunting, inventing and retrofitting machinery and knife crafting.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Donita of Le Mars; a son and his wife, Tom and Sandy of Le Mars; two daughters, LeAnn Cooper and Linda Cooper, both of Sylvania, Ohio; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Joyce and Delton Schroeder of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim.
