ETHEL TSCHAMPEL

MERRILL, Iowa – Ethel Katherine Tschampel, 84, of Merrill died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Merrill United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Hode officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m. at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars, Iowa.

Mrs. Tschampel was born Sept. 20, 1914, near Merrill, the daughter of Herbert and Nellie (Donlin) Kehrberg. She attended country school near Merrill and graduated from Merrill High School in 1931. She taught country school for several years and then attended Wayne State College, receiving her teaching certificate in 1942.

She married Harold F. Tschampel on June 14, 1945, in Merrill. She later attended Westmar College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968. She continued to teach at Remsen-Union until retiring in 1972. He died May 22, 1996.

She was a member of Merrill United Methodist Church and Federated Club of Merrill. She was active in 4-H and enjoyed quilting. She had donated over 100 quilts to several organizations in Plymouth County.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Karen and Vernon F. Harrington, of LeMars; a son and his wife, Jack and Ann of LeMars; four grandchildren, Bethene Harrington Adams, Audra Harrington, and Dustin and Dawn Tschampel, three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Herman of Seattle, and Darlene and her husband, Don Fischer of LeMars; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Herbert “Bud” Kehrberg and two in infancy.

Pallbearers will be Lee Nilles, Bill Scheitler, Jim Hoss, Bill Wecker, Tom Fischer, and Paul Betsworth.
