REMSEN, Iowa -- Gene Loutsch, 84, of Remsen died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Remsen. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Gene Loutsch was born April 30, 1919, in rural Remsen, the son of Dominic and Catherine (Niehus) Loutsch. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education in both the rural school system and St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. He was then a farm laborer in the Remsen area.
On Nov. 17, 1941, he married Mary C. Arens at Remsen. The couple farmed south of Remsen until moving into town in October 1979.
Mr. Loutsch was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Assembly, Lions and Manitoba Horseman's Association. He was active in raising and racing thoroughbred horses in the U.S. and Canada for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife, Mary C. of Remsen; a daughter, Kay and her husband, Jim Grunden of Remsen; four sons and their wives, Don and Janet of Le Mars, Pat and Mary and Tim and Valerie, all of Remsen, and Ken and Kerry of Kingsley, Iowa; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Vernon and his wife, Marge of Le Mars, Arthur, Dale and his wife, Joyce, and Paul and his wife, La Vonne, all of Remsen; four sisters, Norma Tentinger and Kathleen Groepper, both of Remsen, Colette and her husband, Farrell Wright of Moville, Iowa, and Alice Seuntjens of Kingsley; a brother-in-law, Alvin Groepper of Remsen; and a sister-in-law, Cleo Loutsch of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; a sister, Delores Groepper; four brothers-in-law, Les Sheehan, Emmert Tentinger, Kenneth Groepper and Mick Seuntjens; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Loutsch.
Pallbearers will be Jean Klave, Laura Swanson, Mark, Josh, Lindsey and Wesley Loutsch.
