LE MARS, Iowa -- Albert "Babe" Anthony, 77, of Le Mars died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at his residence following a yearlong battle with cancer.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Andrew Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Le Mars, with military rites conducted by American Legion Wasmer Post 241. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until service time today at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Babe was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Mapleton, Iowa, the son of Eugene and Mary (Schleis) Anthony. While still a young boy, he moved with his family to a farm southeast of Le Mars and attended rural school in Union Township. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Sept. 24, 1946, he married Sylvia Kellen at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The couple farmed for several years east of Le Mars. In 1959, Babe began his career trucking livestock and grain when he and Dean Parks started Parks and Anthony Trucking. In 1965, Babe took over the business as sole owner and the business was changed to Anthony Trucking. Babe was well-known by many of the area farmers as he took care of many of the trucking needs. In 1986, he turned the business over to his son, Neal Anthony. Babe continued to work with the business until his health began to fail.

Mr. Anthony was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Trinity Council 1466, and American Legion Wasmer Post 241. He had also been a longtime member of the Elks Club before its closing. He enjoyed being with family and friends and some of his favorite pastimes included trucking, bowling and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia "Syb" of Le Mars; three daughters and their husbands, Gwen and Jerry Weiler of Remsen, Iowa, Beth and Dale Adamson of Hartford, S.D., and Myra and Lynn Miller of Algona, Iowa; a son and his wife, Neal and Denise Anthony of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother and his wife, Leonard and Joanne Anthony of Le Mars; three sisters, Eileen "Toots" Langel and her husband, Vic, of Le Mars, Bernice Koopman and her husband, Mark, of Le Mars, and Helen Langel of Norfolk, Neb.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Donald and Laverne Anthony; and a brother-in-law, Cliff Langel.
