Obituary

Samuel D. Philips who resided at Merrill, passed away at his home there Monday, November 4, 1957, following a sickness which lasted several months. He was 86 years of age.

Mr. Philips was born September 27, 1871, in Freeport, Illinois, and came to Plymouth county as a young man and had since lived there. He was a retired farmer. On April 18, 1895, he was united in marriage with Katherine Weinrich at Hinton, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 6, 1957, at Adaville Evangelical United Brethren church at 2:00 p.m. Rev. L. L. Musser will officiate and burial will be in Pleasant Valley cemetery at Adaville. Mauer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine; 4 sons, A. E. Philips, Merrill; Chester Philips, LeMars; Elmer and William Philips, both of Akron; three daughters, Mrs. Nelson (Esther) Brown of Merrill; Mrs. Earl (Bessie) Sargent of Akron; Mrs. Ralph (Mildred) Gabel of LeMars; 20 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

Mr. Philips was active in community affairs. He was a member of the school board, Liberty township when the Liberty Consolidated school was established. He farmed near Hinton and Merrill vicinity until retiring to Merrill in 1945.

He was preceded in death by a grandchild and two great grandchildren.
