RITES HELD FOR MRS. HOLZAPFEL IN MISSOURI

Mrs. Mabel Kress Holzapfel, 47, passed away March 7, at the Research Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

She was born near Merrill, Iowa, April 2, 1903, to George Martin and Henrietta Kress.

She received her education in Plymouth township school No. 4 and graduated from the LeMars high school in 1920. After graduation she taught in her home school and also in Fredonia township.

In 1924 she entered Westmar College for a teachers training course, graduating in June 1926, and on June 10 the same year she was married to Elmer W. Holzapfel, in the Stanton Evangelical church, she had joined in early childhood.

Together they taught school in Marcus, and Beresford, S.D. While living in Beresford their daughter, Joan, was born. From Beresford they moved to Hawarden, Merrill and Ogden, Iowa, where her husband was superintendent of schools.

When her husband enlisted in the service, they moved to Olathe, Kans., and following his release from the navy they moved to Liberty, Mo., where he became affiliated with the William Jewell college. She also taught school in Liberty to relieve the shortage of teachers until in September 1950 when she became ill.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian church in Liberty, a member of the William Jewell college faculty wives club, patroness of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and the Fourtnightly Club of Liberty.

She was very active in the work of her church and college while her health permitted and always worked for the good of the communities where ever she lived.

Surviving are her husband, daughter, Joan, and one brother, Clifford M. Kress, of Merrill. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1940 and her father in January 1951.

Services were held in First Presbyterian church and burial was in Fairview Cemetery in Liberty, Mo.

Memorial gifts were given to the Cancer Fund at Mrs. Holzapfel’s request. Mr. Holzapfel and daughter, Joan, are very grateful to the friends for the many letters, gifts and cards sent to her, which averaged about 12 each day during her long illness. She always looked forward to each day’s mail. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford M. Kress and Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Bogenrief attended the funeral.
