Death Takes Former School Superintendent

MERRILL, Iowa – Joseph F. Kissinger, 74, died Thursday in a Sioux City hospital of brief illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Merrill United Methodist church. The Rev. Donald Bardole will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Hillside cemetery under direction of the Mauer Funeral Home.

Mr. Kissinger was born May 4, 1906, in Washta. He married Marie Linbeck. She died in 1965. He married Marion Dennler April 6, 1966 in Reinbeck.

He earned a bachelors degree from the University of Northern Iowa and a masters from the University of Iowa. He was a longtime superintendent of the Merrill Public schools and later principal of the LeMars Community schools.

He had been mayor and city clerk of Merrill. He was an active member of the United Methodist church. He also was active in senior citizen activities on state and local levels.

Survivors include the widow; one son, Richard K. of Orange, Calif.; one daughter, Mary Jo, of Chariton, Iowa; one step-son, John Clark Miller of Blackburg, Va.; one step-daughter, Miss Anne Elizabeth Miller, of Davis, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Jack Johnson, of Peterson, and two grandchildren.
