Obituary for Eugene Lee

LE MARS, Iowa -- Eugene A. "Gene" Lee, 79, of Pencil Bluff, Ark., formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, July 3, 2008 in Arkansas. A Graveside Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa. A time of lunch and fellowship will follow at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Gene was born April 23, 1929, on a farm near Hawarden, Iowa, to Emil and Frieda (Specht) Lee. In 1935, the family moved to Le Mars, where he grew up and attended school, graduating in 1947. He served with the 25th Division in Korea. The South Korea government awarded him a war service medal in appreciation of service on the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the war.

He married Alice Wiegers in 1960. He worked for 44 years for Iowa Public Service Company, 17 years as a construction welder for the gas division and 27 years as a corrosion specialist. He retired to Pencil Bluff in 1991.

He received a lifetime membership in the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. He was a Scout master, served on church councils and was a team leader for Evangelism Explosion for many years. In Pencil Bluff, he enjoyed being active in church, singing at the nursing home and caring for his acreage.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Lee of Pencil Bluff; three children and their spouses, Robert and Christine of Norman, Okla., Brian and Susan of Kent, Wash., and Lenka and Scott Wanzer of Fort Worth, Texas; his grandchildren, Aaron and Joshua Lee of Norman, Okla., Jonathan, Alexander and Rebekah Lee of Kent, Wash., and Nicole and Nathaniel Tallman of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters; and a grandchild, David Tallman.
