Ilene L. Nelson, 91, of Le Mars passed away Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2011 at the United Methoodist Church of Le Mars with Reverend John Battern officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations with the family present will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery. Visitations will continue Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Ilene Louise Moses was born December 17, 1919 at Cherokee, Iowa to William and Emma (Blackford) Moses. She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1937. Ilene was united in marriage to Lewis D. Nelson. The couple were blessed with 3 children: Don, Dorothy and Ken. Lewis worked as a brakeman for the Illinois Central Railroad for over 30 years. They had lived at Cherokee, Fort Dodge, and Sioux Falls, SD. Ilene and Lewis raised gladiolus near Aurelia, Iowa and sold them to local florist in surrounding areas. Lewis passed away in 1967. Ilene had been a longtime member of the Methodist Church. Wherever she lived she was active in the church; attending UMW, bible study, missions, adult Sunday School, and had served on numerous committees and boards. She had also served as a Girl Scout leader, P.T.A., past President of the Railroad Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, and Garden Clubs. She had worked in several clothing stores and retirement homes throughout the years. Ilene had also worked for 13 years as the receptionist for the Le Mars Daily Sentinel. After Lewis passed away, Ilene moved to Davenport, Iowa to be closer to her daughter, Dotty. They later moved to Le Mars in 1974. Dotty passed away in 1994. Ilene moved to Sunrise Villa in 2003 and enjoyed her many friends and participating in activities.

Survivors include her 2 sons, Don Nelson and his wife Marie of Urbandale, Iowa and Ken Nelson and his wife Karen of Le Mars; 5 grandchildren, Loren (Pam) Nelson of Grimes, IA, Kelli (Bryan) Ladd of West Des Moines, IA, Christina (Steven) Engstran of White Bear Lake, MN, Jacque (Jeff) Norris of Alexander, VA, and Scott Nelson of Iowa City, IA; 8 great grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren, Jenny (Matt) Schaefer of North English, IA, Sarah (Bruce) Phillips of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Matt DeRocher of Roseland, NJ, Chris (Lisa) DeRocher of Le Mars, and Philip (Vanessa) DeRocher of Kansas City, MO; 11 step great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Edgar Nelson of Stuart, FL, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lewis; a daughter, Dotty Barton; her daughter-in-law, Mary Nelson; and 5 sisters and 2 brothers.
