Obituary for Berdenna Faber

Le Mars, Iowa - Berdenna W. "Bernie" Faber, 91, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at her home.

Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Rev. Timothy Geitz will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Saturday.

Berdenna Wilimina Zwart was born June 25, 1919 at Steen, Minnesota to Cornelius and Elizabeth (Schipper) Zwart. As a young girl she lived in Rock Rapids, Iowa, Lismore, Minnesota and later Kenneth, Minnesota where the family farmed. She received her education in country schools near her home. When Bernie was in 8th grade, she moved with her family to Artesia, California. Bernie married William Hamstra on December 23,1937 in Artesia, California. In 1948, the family returned to Iowa settling in the Sioux Center area. They moved to Merrill, Iowa in 1959. William passed away in 1983. Bernie married Richard Karr on June 1, 1985 in Le Mars, Iowa. Richard passed away in 1988. She later married Bernard Faber on June 24, 1992 in Le Mars where they made their home. Bernard passed away in 1998.

Bernie worked at Archie's Waeside in Le Mars for several years. She also worked for Truck Haven Cafe in Le Mars for over 30 years. Following the truck stop, Bernie was a Senior Companion until she retired at the age of 88. Bernie enjoyed cooking, baking and playing Rummikub with her group of friends. She was blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of their lives. Bernie loved holidays, friends and her church.

Survivors include a son, John Hamstra of Leavenworth, KS, a son, Charles (Mary) Hamstra of Fresno, California; a daughter, Anna Mae (Dave) Weicht of Oacoma, SD; a daughter, Juanita (John) Colwell of Norwood, Colorado; a son, Jerry Hamstra of Sioux City,IA; a son, Terry Hamstra of Le Mars, IA; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents; three husbands; 3 granddaughters, Kim Malcom, Lisa Vander Esch and Lori Hamstra; a great-grandson, Michael Tabbert; a great-great grandson, Eli; a sister, Ada Wiersma; 3 brothers, Corney, Jake and Bill Zwart.
