PIONEER AKRON WOMAN IS CALLED BY DEATH DEC. 16

Rites Are Held For Mrs. C. Hitzemann Last Thursday

The passing of one of Akron's oldest resdents Mrs. Caroline Hitzemann, on Tuesday morning, December 16, 1958, just three days after her 89th birthday, was briefly mentioned in these columns last week.

Caroline, daughter of Johann Frederick and Elisa Katrina (Rehder) Offenerde, was born December 13, 1869, in Heide, Holstein, Germany. She was baptized February 14, 1870, into the Lutheran faith in her home church and confirmed there in 1884. During girlhood she attended an exclusive girls' school. In June, 1889, she came to the United States, first living at Elk Point, S. D., and then for a time being employed in the City Hotel in Akron.

She was united in marriage with August Hitzemann in Akron, March 24, 1895, in Trinity Lutheran church by Rev. Carl Hoff, first pastor of the church. She and her husband farmed near Akron, Westfield and in Union county, S. D., before retiring and moving to Akron a number of years ago.

Her husband, parents, a brother, sister, and a young son, Frederick preceded her in death.

Left to mourn her passing are three sons, Adolph, Carl, and Henry, all of Akron; two daughters, Mrs. Minnie Von Hagel, of Akron and Mrs. Bertha lammers, of Red Elm, S. D.; also a sister-in-law, Mrs. Chris. (Emma) Reemts, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

Mrs. Hitzemann was the last living charter member of Trinity Lutheran church, a member of the Ladies' Aid and regularly attended the Women's Mission Circle. She had been blind the last few years. This venerable woman was held in high esteem by all who knew her.

Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon in Trinity Lutheran church, Pastor Luther A. Meyer officiating. Singers were Mrs. Donald Johnson, and Miss Darlene Lehmann, and Mrs. Luther A. Meyer was organist. The grandsons, Arnold Hitzemann, Wayne Von Hagel, Melvin Hitzemann, Harold Kleihauer, Robert Hitzemann, and Paul Von Hagel, acted as pallbearers. Burial was beside her husband in Riverside cemetery.
