HOLD RITES FOR PIONEER UNION COUNTY FARMER

George H. Wakeman Is Summoned Following Serious Operation

Brief mention was made in these columns last week of the passing of a pioneer resident of Union county, S. D., George Wakeman who died in the Sioux Valley hospital at Sioux Falls, S. D., the morning of December 30, 1941, following a serious oeration, aged 80 years, 2 months, and 20 days.

George Henry Wakeman was born October 1, 1861, near Wolocotville, Connecticut. In may, 1866, he came with his parents to what is now Union county, S. D., where he grew to young manhood. On November 3, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Dora Larkin. To his union six sons and three daughters were born. On son and one daughter preceded him in death.

Left to mourn his departure are his widow; five sons, Millard, Glenn, and Gilbert, of Union county, S.D.; Walter, of Vancouver, Wash., and Lester, of DeSmet, S. D.; two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Johnson, of Montrose, S. D., and Mrs. Edith Crammond, of Sioux Falls, S. D.; and 22 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

For several years Mr. Wakeman was engaged in the grain and implement business in chatsworth, Iowa, near Epworth, North Dakota. In farm in union county, S. D., north of their home. Mr. Wakeman was a man of sterling haracter and strict integrity, he was kind and affectionate to his family and he possessed a very friendly and happy disposition that won him a host of friends. He will be sincerely missed and mourned in the community where he has been a useful and respected citizen for nearly three-quarters of a century.

Funeral services were held last friday afternoon, at 1 o'clock at the family home and at 1:30 o'clock in the Akron Methidist church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. A. Howe.

Acting as pallbearers were five grandsons of the deceased, Curtis, Leland, allan, and Keith Johnson, and Harvey Wakeman, and Wm. Huebner, Jr. Interment was in the cemetery at Merrill, Iowa, where a son and daughter are buried.
