Former resident Richard Rhodes, 38, Cleghorn, killed when car hits combine

Richard A. Rhodes, 38, Cleghorn service station operator and former Le Mars resident, was killed instantly late Tuesday afternoon when the car he was driving slammed into the rear of a combine.

Highway Patrolman Richard Helmers reported the accident at 5:20 p.m. occurred 4 miles east of Remsen on highways.

Assisting with the investigation were Sheriff Jim Mertes and Deputy Sheriff Ed Guntren.

The eastbound 1962 Chevrolet hit the rear end of a self propelled combine driven by John Bindner, rural Remsen. He escaped injury, but was thrown off.

A passenger on the combine was Mrs. Bindner. She was thrown many yards from, machine by the impact. Patrolman Helmers reported she suffered bruises.

Mrs. Bindner was taken in Luedtke's ambulance to Floyd Valley hospital, where her condition was reported "good" Wednesday morning.

The heavy piece of farm equipment was knocked into the ditch and the car remained on the road.

Mr. Rhodes was pinned inside the car, which was towed to the yard at Remsen of the deputy sheriff where the body was removed about 8 p.m., the sheriff said. Thiel wrecker from Remsen was called.

Mr. Rhodes was the owner and operator of the D-X garage and service station at Cleghorn. Authorities reported death was caused by decapitation.

The body was taken to the Fisch funeral home, Remsen.

Funeral services for Richard Asberry Rhodes, a Le Mars native, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic church, Remsen, with Msgr. F. P. Scliultes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Fisch funeral home, Remsen, after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the parish rosary to be recited at 8 p.m.

Mr. Rhodes was born March 10, 1931, in Le Mars, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Rhodes. He had lived in Le Mars, Kingsley and Remsen before moving to Cleghorn 13 years ago. He had owned Bud's auto repair shop at Cleghorn. His marriage to the former Ruth Pick took place Jan. 15, 1951, at Remsen.

Surviving arc his wife; two daughters and three sons, Patricia, Phillip, Pamela, Kenneth and Dean, all at home; his father, Thurman Rhodes, Marcus; four brothers, Wendell of Rockford, Ill., Sumner and Darrell, both of Omaha, and Thurman Jr., Springfield, Ark., and one sister, Sylvia in California.
