In the death of Mrs. Fred Waterbury at her home, southwest of town, Sunday evening, October 10, 1941, there came to her many friends in this community a deep sense of personal loss. For nearly 63 years she had resided in Akron and its vicinity, presiding over her modest home, and faithfully and willingly performing her part as a helpful neighbor and friend.
She was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage on Saturday, October 11, and all of her children were called at once to her bedside and remained with her until she answered the Master's call.
Mabel Josephine Chandler was the youngest daughter of Tryphena and Chester Chandler and was born in Plymouth county, Iowa, on n farm near the Broken Kettle on April 8, 1878. In 1879 she moved with her parents to Portlandville, now the city of Akron, and here completed her education in the public school. Her parents then moved to a farm in Union county, S. D. On November 20, 1901, she was united in marriage with Fred E. Waterbury. They at once made their home on a farm, northwest of Akron, later moving to Akron, where Mr. Waterbury owned and operated a general store. In 1905 they moved to a claim in Gregory county, S. D.
In 1900 they purchased a farm, south of Akron, which remained their home for twenty-one years. For the last eight years they have made their home on a farm, southwest of Akron, in Union county, S. D., with a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Hummel. In her early life she became a member of the Akron Methodist Church.
Besides her husband, she is survived by four children, Mrs. Olive Mann, of Winner, S.D.; Mrs. Erma Hummel, of Akron; Mr. Russell Waterbury, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Mrs. Mrs. Letha Booth, of Le Mars, Iowa. One son, Harley, died in infancy. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Raish, of Akron, and: Mrs. Ida Nickel, of Tulare, Calif.; and one brother, Earl Chandler, of Hettinger, N. D., besides several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Akron Methodist church, and there was a large attendance. Rev. W. H. Lease, of Schaller, Iowa, former local Methodist pastor, delivered the sermon, and the pastor Rev. A. A. Howe, assisted in the service.
