John Moritz.
John Moritz, former Remsen resident, passed away at his home in Calumet, Iowa, on April 27, 1953, following a heart attack, Mr. Moritz had suffered a stroke eight months ago but had been up and around and his death was unexpected. He was 66 years of age.
Mr. Moritz was born January 27, 1886 in Remsen. He was married to Sophie Scherner on December 21, 1910 at Holstein, Iowa. They had lived at Paullina for two years and at Calumet for eleven years. Prior to that time their home was Remsen. Mr. Moritz was a feed salesman.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 at Zion Evangelical and Reformed church at Calumet. Burial was in the Remsen cemetery under direction of the Baumgarten funeral home of Sutherland. Rev. A. Youngschlager officiated at last rites.
Survivors include his wife, Sophie; four daughters, Mrs. August Hansen and Mrs. Sylvestor Oehlerts, both of Remsen; Mrs. Norbert Kellen of Sioux City; Mrs. Aaron Waller of Marcus; 12 grandchildren; one brother, David of Sioux City; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Meyer of Leeds; Mrs. Tena Speiker of Topeka, Kansas, Mrs. Gerta Ufken of Morehead, Minnesota; Mrs. Maggie Raveling of Lucan, Minnesota.
Deceased was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and three sisters. He was baptized at the Evangelical church in Remsen.
Remains were at the funeral home in Sutherland until 10:00 a.m. Thursday when they were brought to the Moritz home in Calumet. – Le Mars Globe Post, April 30, 1953, page 5.
