TWO MORE PIONEERS GET DEATH SUMMONS. John Juhl and Jacob Letsche Both Dead at Advanced Ages. Both Long Time Residents Here.
Jacob Letsche, another one of the early day settlers of this community, died at the home of his son, Herman, southeast of Remsen, Tuesday evening of infirmities of old age. He was 76 years old and a native of Germany. Surviving are one daughter and four sons. The funeral was held this afternoon with services in Christ Lutheran church and burial in the Remsen cemetery.
Mr. Letsche was in excellent health until last October when he suddenly began to fail, and during the past two weeks the end had been expected almost momentarily. Although he was given the best of care and medical attention, he failed to withstand the effects of his age and general debility, and the end came at 7 o’clock Tuesday evening.
Jacob Letsche was born on October 22, 1848, in the village of Undingen, near Reutlingen, Wurtenburg, Germany. He came from a family of tillers of the soil, and this occupation he followed throughout his life until he retired in 1910. On reaching young manhood inn his native country, he was united in marriage to Anna Maria Hermann, and the couple continued to farm in the vicinity of their native home until 1895 when they emigrated to this country and at once settled on a farm ten miles southeast of Remsen. They occupied the 80 acre tract now better known as belonging to the Hewicker estate, for one year and then moved to the old Boiler quarter in the same neighborhood. After spending three years there as renters, they purchased the farm and it is still the property of the family. Mr. and Mrs. Letsche lived on this farm until 1910 when they retired and came to Remsen. About six years ago Mrs. Letsche passed away, and three years ago the aged father went to the farm to live with his son Herman.
Jacob Letsche was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, and during his residence in Remsen was a regular attendant at Christ church. He was a staunch Christian gentleman who always dealt fairly with his neighbor and whose integrity and admirable nature won him many warm friends. He is widely known in this end of the county where he has lived for 30 years, and his many acquaintances held him in the highest esteem.
Mr. Letsche was the father of seven children, two of whom passed away in infancy. He also had one sister and one brother, both of whom died in their native land. The surviving children are: Martin, Herman, Mrs. Louis Schmitz and Gotthielf Letsche, living on a farm near Humboldt, S.D.
The funeral was held this afternoon with services conducted by Rev. A. Noack, of Christ Lutheran church. Services were at the home at 1 o’clock, and later in the church. The Body was laid to rest in the Remsen cemetery. The pall bearers were: Paul, Roland, Irwin and Carl Letsche and Albert Schmitz, all grandsons of the deceased, and Fritz Hermann, a nephew. - Remsen Bell-Enterprise?
