Remsen Man Hung Self with Neckties. J.G. Sanny Had Been Sick For About 7 Years.
John George Sanny, 65, a long time resident of Remsen, killed himself by strangulation some time Wednesday morning at the home of his sister, Mrs. Clara Bjork. Sanny had been suffering from poor health for about seven years.
Coroner S. H. Luken, called to the scene, said that Sanny had last been seen alive some time between 9:50-10:00 a.m. Wednesday.
Mrs. Elsie Bronhorst discovered the body at about 12 noon. She found Sanny clad in a bath robe.
He had tied several neckties together and put the string of them over the top of the door of his first floor room. He then tied one end of the string to the door knob on one side of the door, and looped the other end over the top of the door. As he stood facing the door, he tied the other end around his neck. Then, by merely relaxing his knees, and letting his body sag, he put all his weight on his neck.
Cororner Luken said that even if he had wanted to save himself moments later, as is the natural tendency because of the self-preservation instinct, he could not have done so.
Luken cited an experiment conducted here in the days of the old time saloon and the hitching posts. He said that a group of men were arguing about the paralyzing effect of strangulation and decided to try it. One of the group volunteered to be the subject. The man had to squat under the hitching post to even try the experiment. Even so, he could not raise himself enough to take the strain off the rope, and in fact, he nearly died before his friends could rescue him, even though they were ready to help at a moment’s notice.
John George Sanny was born August 10, 1891 southeast of Remsen and had lived in and around Remsen his entire life. He was 65 years of age and had been ailing for eight years. He was a retired farmer, the son of the late Henry and Elsie Sanny. He was not married.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church with Rev. Paul Wuebben officiating. Burial will be in the Remsen city cemetery under direction of the Moeller funeral home in Remsen.
Survivors include sisters, Mrs. Clara Bjork, Mrs. Frank (Dora) Engelbrecht and Mrs. Ted (Martha) Amundson all of Remsen; brothers, Henry of Remsen and Albert of Cleghorn. A sister, Mrs. Wanda Peterson preceded him in death.
Military services will be conducted as Mr. Sanny was a veteran of World War I. He was past commander of the V.F. W. in Remsen and a member of the American Legion. – Le Mars Globe-Post, Thursday, Sept. 13, 1956, page 1.
