Aged Resident is Claimed By Death. Henry Thode Passes Away at Home of Daughter Near Le Mars Saturday Afternoon.

Death last Saturday afternoon claimed Henry Thode, former resident of Remsen who in late years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Efford Moser, near Le Mars. Mr. Those was 80 years old. His death was due to infirmities and he had been in failing strength for several years. Surviving him are two daughters and one son, besides several grand children and one great grand child. Funeral services were held Tuesday with burial in the Remsen cemetery.
Mr. Thode had been making his home with the Moser family for the last seven years, having retired from business in Remsen. In the several recent years he had been in a feeble condition and although he received excellent care and professional attention his condition gradually weakened and for a number of weeks he had been confined to the sick-room. Saturday afternoon at about three o’clock he passed away suddenly and without warning of the approaching end. He was found dead by his daughter.
Henry Thode was born in Heide, Holstein, Germany, March 5, 1855. He attended the grade schools and later entered college in Germany, and was a college graduate. He lived with his parents until the time of his marriage on September 14, 1880, to Sophia Thedens, and shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Thode came to the Untied States, settling in Wolcott, Iowa. Mr. Thode went into business and for many years devoted himself to the clothing and dry goods lines, both in retail stores and as a traveling salesman. Leaving the town of Wolcott Mr. and Mrs. Thode spent a short time in Clinton and later moved to Davenport where they spent a number of years.
In 1910 Mr. Thode accepted a position with the J. P. Beck company of Remsen and for seven years was in charge of the men’s furnishings and clothing department. He made many friends for himself and the store, and was a faithful employee. In 1918 he left the employ of the Beck company and established a men’s furnishings store of his own, occupying the room now used a s a director’s’ room by the Firs Trust & Savings bank. He operated here with success for 10 years, but in 1928, when Mrs. Thode’s health began to fail the couple moved to the farm home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Moser, in Fredonia township. Mrs. Thode passed away while living there. The Moser family now reside near Le Mars.
