Marvin Joseph Gengler
July 12, 1933 – October 28, 2022

Marvin Joseph Gengler, 89 of Boone, IA, passed away at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, IA on Friday, October 28, 2022.

He was born on July 12, 1933, in Remsen, IA the son of Leo Peter Gengler and Anne Ludwig Gengler.

On June 09, 1962, Marv married Anna Marie Giese of Watertown, SD at St. Joseph’s Church in Huron, SD.

He was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Remsen, IA. From 1953 to 1957 he served in the Air Force as a Radar Technician supporting the Korean War and was stationed on an island off the coast of Japan. After completing his overseas duty, Marv was reassigned to the Dallas Center, IA radar station.

Marv was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Boone, IA and during his life was involved with the Lion’s Club, Elks Lodge, and the American Legion at various locations throughout the Midwest. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially during the holidays and in Okoboji, IA at the cabin or on the water.

He was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Anne, sisters Ethel Kosse and Joann Nitzschke, brother Donald, and daughter Terri Davidson.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Ann, and their children: Lisa (Scott) Switzer of Dallas, TX; Keith (Elizabeth) Gengler of the Quad Cities, IL; Gregg (Jill) Gengler of Phoenix, AZ; Mark (Cheri) Gengler of Minneapolis, MN; and son-in-law Roger Davidson of Boone, IA. Marv learned recently that he had a daughter prior to his marriage, Cindy (Scott) McMillen of Cedar Rapids, IA, who were universally welcomed by the entire family. He is also survived by ten grandchildren: Cole, Rowenna, Hannah, Sydnie, Kyle, Ian, Anneliese, Josh, Kylie, and Christa; and two great-grandchildren: Jack and Evvie.

Marv was known for his quick sense of humor and affinity for having conversations with whomever would be passing by, especially when in the yard or from the seat of his riding mower. You might see him doing something playful like waiting for someone to notice his three-foot-long licorice wrapped around his neck as he was nibbling on it or delivering the perfect punch line from his expansive joke repertoire. He enjoyed a stiff rum and coke and was always on the search for the perfect all-you-can-eat fish fry. He concocted his own highly anticipated Irish Crème, delivering it to friends and neighbors over the winter holidays. He took great pride in his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and even his pet’s accomplishments, bending the ear to whomever would listen. He will be dearly missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to either of the non-profit organizations that Marv supported: Boone Area Humane Society Donate - Humane Society for Boone County (hsforbc.org) or Wounded Warrior Project Wounded Warrior Project.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, with Father Tim Johnson officiating. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Visitation with the family present to greet friends will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at Schroeder-Stark-Welin Funeral Home, with a Rosary Prayer Service taking place at 8:00 p.m.
