LE MARS - Janet H. Manning, 91, of Le Mars, IA, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at the Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. James Church in Le Mars. Father Doug Klein will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. with a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Friday. Janet Hazel Hartogh was born on March 3, 1932, in Riceville, IA, the daughter of John Michael and Esther Marie (Mueller) Hartogh and the oldest of six children. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma, IA. Following high school, Janet enrolled in the Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA and completed her RN degree, one of the first in her family to go to college. On June 9, 1956, Janet and Gerald "Pappy" Manning were united in marriage at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma, IA.

Janet worked a lifelong career in health care. She was a nurse at Floyd Valley Hospital and The Abbey of Le Mars as well as a Public Health Nurse for Plymouth County. In retirement she volunteered with Hospice of Siouxland and was recognized by the Iowa Hospice Organization as one of the volunteers of the year in 2007.

Family was most important to Janet. She raised six children and instilled a strong work ethic, a love for learning, athletics, music and a strong spiritual core. A hot breakfast was prepared each morning to send the kids off to school. Janet was an amazing seamstress and with much patience, taught her daughters to sew. She designed and made her dress for the wedding to Pappy. She loved to dance and was one of the luckiest people, with winnings too numerous to mention. She was a very competitive bingo player at Holy Spirit.

She dreamed of traveling the world and she did later in life taking trips to Kenya, Ireland, England, Italy, Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and made the pilgrimage to Our Lady of Medjugorje the site of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.

She was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and Right to Life. Janet was also a longtime supporter of Gehlen Catholic Schools. She volunteered her time at the Plymouth County Museum and studied genealogy, was a member of the Red Hat Society and the St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing Alumni Association. She followed current events and was politically active.

Survivors include her son, Mike of Carlsbad, CA; son, David and wife, Michlen of Louisville, KY and their children, Jared and Kane; son, Joe and wife, Debbie of Iowa City, IA and their children, Owen and Richie; daughter, Patrice Kistner and husband, Kelly of McCook Lake, SD and her children, Zac (Jamie), Clint and Geri Lynn (Chip Dodril) with their father, Marc Traver; daughter, Linda Taylor-Manning of Bremerton, WA and her children, Colman, Noah, and Olivia with their father, Rob; daughter, Sue Renfro and husband, Kelly of Sioux City, IA; three great-grandchildren, Jaxsen and Tayah Traver, Max Traver; a sister, Frances Lamerson of White Lake, MI; brothers, Leon (Mary) Hartogh of Marion, IA, Bernard Hartogh of Elkhart, IN and Kenneth (Sue) Hartogh of Richmond, IN; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gerald on March 25, 2013, a sister, Arlene (Joseph) Thome; and a brother-in-law, Jerry Lamerson.
