William Westergard dies of Oct. 4 Accident Injuries.

William J. Westergard, 76, longtime well known LeMars resident, died of traffic accident injuries Tuesday evening (Nov. 15, 1977) at Floyd Valley hospital. He had been injured Oct. 4.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic church, LeMars, with Msgr. Leonard Ziegmann officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, LeMars, under direction of the Luedtke funeral home.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday and the Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife and a son, Richard, both of LeMars, and a daughter, Mrs. Darrell (Pearl) Scholer, Omaha.

Mr. Westergard was injured Oct. 4, in a 2-car traffic accident at the south LeMars city limits, the intersection of highway 75 and Dubuque Pack road.

His car was in collision with a northbound car driven by Bernice Nettleton, Sioux Center. The Nettleton car struck the passenger side of the Westergard car.

Dr. Donald Faber, assistant Plymouth county medical examiner, today reproted to investigating officers, deputy sheriff David Stock and highway patrol trooper Rich Helmers, that Mr. Westergard’s death occurred as a result of injuries sustained in that accident.

His is the sixth traffic fatality in Plymouth county to date this year.

Mr. Westergard was taken by the LeMars ambulance service to Floyd Valley hospital the day of the accident. He was later released from the hospital. Following this, he was hospitalized at Sioux City and then transferred to Floyd Valley hospital.

William J. Westergard, 76, who lived at Armel Acres, LeMars, died Tuesday (Nov. 15, 1977) at Floyd Valley hospital of injuries sustained Oct. 4, 1977 in a 2-car crash at the south edge of LeMars on highway 75.

Mr. Westergard was born June 24, 1901, in New York, New York, to Nick and Anne Westergard. He lived in Hawarden and married Angie Gerdes in Akron in 1922.

In 1930 the family moved to LeMars where he was a well-known well driller. He later was in the construction business retiring in 1962.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic church in LeMars with Rev. Msgr. Leonard Ziegmann officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, under direction of the Luedtke funeral home. Grandsons will act as pallbearers.

A wake service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with the KC rosary at 8 p.m. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Angie and a son Richard of LeMars; a daughter Mrs. Darrell (Pearl) Scholer, Omaha; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Maggie Ronan, Alcester, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dan, and two sisters.
