April 14, 1924THEODORE HOFFMANN DIES AT AGE OF 70.
Resident of LeMars for Five Years Succumbs of Hardening of The Arteries.Theodore Hoffmann, a resident of LeMars for five years, died at his home at 24 Fifth avenue N.E., Friday afternoon at 12:30. Death was caused by arterio sclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Deceased had reached the age of 70 years, 7 months and 6 days.
Mr. Hoffmann was born on September 5, 1853, in Beckerich, Luxembourg, and came to this country with his father in 1870, settling on a homestead in Johnson township. His mother died in Luxembourg.
In Johnson township, he and his father farmed. His father died in 1884, leaving him and his sister to care for the homestead. On December 8, 1874, he was united in marriage to Anna Stoeffel, and continued to farm the homestead until four years ago last fall, when they moved to LeMars. Mrs. and Mrs. Hoffmann have been living in LeMars ever since.
Mr. Hoffmann lived here during the grasshopper plague, and fought his way in the world with other old pioneers of Plymouth county, who lived here during the time the grasshoppers had control. He was one of the first settlers of Plymouth county, coming here before LeMars was ever thought of.
The funeral was held this morning at the St. Joseph’s church, Msgr. W. A. Pape officiating. Burial was made in the St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery.
Two sons, Dennis and Theodore Hoffmann, of Johnson township, and two daughters, Mary and Louise, together with his beloved wife and one sister, Mrs. Anna Hecht, of Merrill, mourn the loss of Mr. Hoffmann.
