The Late John Herron.
John Herron, ex-Treasurer of Plymouth county, died suddenly at his residence, in this city, on the morning of the 8th inst.

He had been in failing health for several years; but he was feeling well the day before he died, and had taken a ride of several miles in the country.

Mr. Herron was born in Wexford county, Ireland, in 1836, and was therefore 46 years of age, at the time of his death.

He came to this country with his parents, in 1850, and located at Madison, Wis., where he learned the printing business. He became the editor of the National Democrat at Mineral Point, Wis., in 1864 and continued to control its columns until 1868.

In March, 1869, he homesteaded near Lemars. In January, 1870, he went to Vermillion, D.T., where he worked at the printing business for a few months, in the office of the Republican. From there he went to Yankton and became proprietor of the Press. He then returned to Lemars, and during the years 1872 and 1873 he worked in the SENTINEL office. In the fall of 1873, he was elected Treasurer of Plymouth county, and was re-elected three times, retiring from office January last.

Mr. Herron had many friends in our city and county, and notwithstanding he was a Democrat in politics he had a large Republican following, as was manifested by the majority that was cast for him whenever he was a candidate.

His funeral took place Monday at 11 o’clock a.m. at the Catholic church, of which he was a member.

After an address by Father Lenahan, of Sioux City, the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic churchyard.

The pall-bearers were as follows: P. F. Dalton, G. Haerling, W. H. Dent, W. S. Welliver, N. L. Greer, E. H. Shaw, Jas. H. Stanley, James Hughes, Leonard Koenig, Wm. Barret, A. W. Parsons and A. M. Duus.

Thus passes from our midst a citizen who has left a lasting impression on the early history of our city; a man of more than ordinary intellect and influence; a man who will be missed and mourned by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances for his many attractive qualities of head and heart.
