Donald D. Lias, 86, formerly of Westfield, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at Mercy One in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 29, 2023 at Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Akron, Iowa with Pastor Mike Hulinsky officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Akron, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will begin at noon on Saturday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may be expressed to the family through www.rexwinkelfh.com.
Donald Dean Lias was born on July 5, 1936 in Westfield, Iowa to Wayne and Edna Pauline (Michael) Lias. As a child, Don helped his family on the farm and he loved to go hunting with his farm dog, Ring. He attended Westfield Community Schools before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Don was proud to serve his country. Don met and was united in marriage to Mary Nelson in Southern California. They moved back to Westfield for a short time before moving to Sterling, Illinois where Don was working with his brother-in-law, Duane Alan Wirth. They then moved back to Westfield and Don began working at Sioux Tools in Sioux City as a machinist. Don worked there for over 40 years before he retired. Don also served as a constable for the city of Westfield for several years.
Don was a long time member of Westfield Congregational Church in Westfield, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and racing dirt bikes. After retirement, Don became a talented woodturner and made many beautiful bowls, vases, and other hand made items.
Don is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Lias; three daughters: Viola P. Lias of Holstein, IA, Diana M. (Dennis) Miller of Elk Point, SD, and Maryfrances (Kevin) Stiles of rural Le Mars; nine grandchildren: Anthony, Adam (Whitney), Amanda, Patricia, Andrew, Susan, Angela, James, and Alyssa Joy; nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald James ‘Jimmy’ Lias; and four siblings: Helen Hoffman, Harry ‘Bud’ Lias, Frances Wirth, and Norman Lias.
