Funeral services for Charles E. Smith, 83, retired Le Mars carpenter who died Sunday after an extended sickness were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. George Episcopal church. Rev. Roger N. Brandt officiated. Burial was in the city cemetery under direction of Mauer’s funeral home.
Charles Edward Smith was born April 8, 1878 at Dixon, Ill. He came to Plymouth county with his parents as a child of 5 and had resided here since. His marriage to Elizabeth Merrit took place Jan. 23, 1913 in Le Mars.
Mr. Smith was a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker, retiring because of ill health several years ago. He also was a member of the Le mars Volunteer Fire department for many years.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; one son, Bernard C. Smith, of South Holland, Ill.; three grand children and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Daugherty of Bremmerton, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ernestina Nass Smith, and two brothers.
